The Sixties: Los Angeles Area Social Movements/Activists

The Sixties has come to be known as an era of vibrant social, cultural and political challenges throughout the world starting in about 1963 and lasting until the mid-1970s. In the United States, movements for civil rights, women’s rights, gay and lesbian rights (not yet LGBTQ) among others, proliferated, along with anti-war and counter culture movements. Los Angeles was no exception and a variety of social movements flowered, only some of which are included in this Collection. None of the series included here was conducted as part of a specific project on “the 1960s.” Rather, the series grouped here under the rubric of “the sixties” are comprised of interviews that were conducted as part of various other projects, including classes, and under varying auspices at both the university and in the community. Unfortunately, this resulted in the absence of any series focused on the Black movement(s) of the period.
