INTERVIEW DESCRIPTION - The third interview with Mitsuyo Nakai is very brief (only ten minutes) and focuses mainly on her work life, social activities and plans for the future.

- SUBJECT BIO - Mitsuyo Nakai was born in Washington state, in a lumber community, to parents who were both from Wakayama prefecture. When she was in high school, the family moved to California, and after staying with a relative on a farm in Venice, the family moved to Terminal Island, where both parents worked in the canneries. Along with the other Nisei children from Terminal Island, she attended San Pedro high school. In addition to taking care of the household tasks, she held several jobs after school and on weekends. After her marriage, she attended a school for physical therapists and started her own practice in Elsinore in 1939, while her husband continued to work on Terminal Island. The family was interned at Manzanar, and her two sons were born there. After the war, they returned to Elsinore, where she reestablished her practice, forming a partnership with her husband who also trained as a physical therapist. - *** File: timnakai5.mp3 Audio Segments and Topics: (0:00-2:30)... She worked from 6AM to 6PM without taking holidays. Only after her children went to college did she cut back her hours. She began to participate in more social activities. Still, she did have to drop out of some of the activities because she wanted time for herself in the evenings. Some activities also had out of state conventions which she could not go to, so she dropped the activities. (2:30-4:35)... She likes sports but did not participate in any after she was married. Her husband was a high school trainer. She says that she is happiest when her children are happy and worry free. She was a part of the Terminal Island Association, which held a picnic once a year and also a New Year's Party. (4:35-6:38)... She has lived in Elsinore for 40 years. The city has changed over the years and increased in population. She talks about some rotary club boys who were spending time around their house. (6:38-9:36)... As she gets older she expects her son to finish school and perhaps come and take over her practice. She still wants to work part time and would help him if he came to the practice. Her husband is a Mason and spends time with the group. She is also involved in the Rotary Club. Her husband has been a member for 23 years. end of tape
